- The Jewel EMBLEM
The emblem of the Society is a butterfly in flight, set against a plain background. The wings of the butterfly are outlined in the colours blue, green, yellow and red, attached to a central feminine figure in violet. To the right of the butterfly symbol is printed the abbreviation ‘JEWEL’ in the colour indigo purple. Beneath it is inscribed the name of the Society in orange and indigo.
The butterfly is an iconic symbol of liberation and transformational change, as well as hope and renewal. The emblem exemplifies JEWEL’s objective of promoting the empowerment of women and children in Johor, so that society as a whole may prosper, and all can aspire to be the best that they can be.
The JEWEL emblem is made up of seven colours, these being the colours of the rainbow spectrum. In eastern tradition, these colours are associated with qualities and values which the members of the Society hold in high regard.
- Violet represents beauty, creativity and inspirational leadership; a reverence for life, and the willingness to self-sacrifice in the service of others.
- Indigo purple represents integrity, wisdom, focus and independent judgement.
- Green signifies peace, compassion, generosity, humility and balance.
- Yellow represents optimism, confidence and self-worth.
- Orange signifies energy, happiness, success and the freedom to be the best that one can be.
- Red denotes courage, vitality, stability and a pioneering spirit.
- Blue represents knowledge, decisiveness and the spirit of truth and purpose.
The central figure represents humanity, and symbolizes the humanitarian focus of the Society.
The plain background indicates sincerity in efforts, and the mindful avoidance of pretense and artifice.
The JEWEL Emblem was designed by JEWEL’s inaugural Vice President, Her Highness Gusti Raden Ayu Retno Astrini Mangkoenegoro VIII (fondly known as Puteri).
Its seven-colour scheme was proposed by Thanaletchumi Selvarajah. The emblem’s meaning was interpreted and written into text by JEWEL’s inaugural President Thanam Visvanathan-Suresh, based on research by Hartdeep Kaur and feedback offered by the society’s Founder Members.
The JEWEL Emblem was formally adopted by the Johor Women’s League in April 2009.
