Jewel’s 3rd Urban Safety Forum for Women 26 March 2011
3rd JEWEL Urban Safety Forum for Women was held on the 26th March 2011 at the Auditorium Kompleks Pusat Islam, Johor Bahru. The Urban Safety Forum is an annual affair organized by JEWEL, with the support of the Johor Bahru City Council and Royal Malaysian Police Johor Contingent, to highlight the latest issues and trends of crimes affecting women and girls.
It is held in March in conjunction with International Women’s Day (March 8th) and Police Day (March 25). This year’s main sponsor was Iskandar Investment Berhad.
The theme for this year was ‘Educate, Engage, Empower Adolescent Girls Against Violence’. Some 15 schools participated in the programme. The focus topic in the morning was “Understanding the Concept of Statutory Rape”.
Safety activist Captain K. Bala conducted a ‘City Survival Skills’ workshop for the 600 teachers and students in the afternoon. Guest speakers at the forum included Associate Professor Siti Hawa bt Ali, School of Health Sciences, USM, Kubang Kerian, Chief Inspector Salwari bt Hashim, Sexual Crime Investigation Unit, PDRM Johor . The session was moderated by Thanam Visvanathan , Jewel President.
