IMSHA 2016 – 20 Malaysian Social Heroes Recognized

A total of 20 NGOs and exemplary individuals were acknowledged at the 3rd Iskandar Malaysia Social Hero Awards 2016 (IMSHA 2016) at Holiday Villa Johor Bahru on 3rd November 2016. Award recipients comprising individuals and organisations were recognized for their outstanding contributions and involvement in active and beneficial social community works in Johor.

The 11 categories (Applicable to individual or organisational nomination) are Animal & Wildlife, Disaster Relief and Public Safety, Education Advancement, Environmental Preservation/Protection, Health Services, Human Empowerment, Poverty & Hunger Relief, Corporate Social Responsibility, Social Innovator, Arts, Culture & Heritage.

CJ.MY’s Fung Lee Jean received a trophy and a certificate of appreciation under the Human Empowerment (individual) category. The 58-year-old was acknowledged for her contributions in various programs, such as Patch Adams Clowning workshop and being a delegate in the Women’s Peace Group to North Korea.

Lee Jean, a pharmacist and yoga instructor from JB Happy & Joyous Club Fung said when people make a conscious effort to be happy, it will contribute to the peace and well-being of the community.

Meanwhile, Johor Women’s League (Jewel) was the recipient for the Public Safety (organisation) award for organising programmes for abused women and children and promoting public awareness on paedophilia and safety from crime for women and children.

The event was graced by the presence of YABhg Tun Dato’ Musa Hitam as the Patron for IMSHA and Datuk Ismail Ibrahim, Chief Executive of Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA).

Envisioned as Iskandar Malaysia’s premier community service award, IMSHA intends to raise awareness on the need for all to share the responsibility of working towards a more inclusive, compassionate and effective society.

This year, over 200 nominations were received for organisations and individuals via Facebook and email. The nominations were then analysed and rated against a ‘social impact rating’ system by Frost and Sullivan, an independent technical committee and the results vetted for a final time by a Leadership Council made up of prominent citizens.

IMSHA2016 is a community-led event driven by The Iskandarian (Iskandar Malaysia’s Official Newspaper), Frost and Sullivan and Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA). IMSHA2016 is supported by UM Land, Maslee and Country Garden Pacific View as official sponsors.

The 4th Iskandar Malaysia Social Hero Awards 2017 (IMSHA2017) nominations are now open and members of the public may submit nominations through The Iskandarian’s website
