It’s March ! And the ever popular JEWEL International Women’s Day High Tea is back ! This year, JEWEL is proud to bring you Zainah Anwar , the internationally acclaimed, award winning co-founder and former executive director of Sisters In Islam ( SIS ).

Johor born Zainah is currently the Executive Director of Musawah, a global movement for equality and justice in the Muslim family. She also writes a monthly column on politics, religion and women’s rights for the Sunday Star. Last year, she earned the accolade of the being among the ” 10 Most Influential Muslim Women in the  World “.

Zainah will speak on the theme of ” Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity ” – this being the United Nation’s International Women’s Day theme for 2015. Zainah studied Journalism at the Mara Institute of Technology in Shah Alam,  ( now Universiti Teknologi Mara, UiTM ). After a stint as a journalist at the New Straits Times, Zainah went on to do her Masters at Boston University, USA, and later read International Law and Diplomacy at the Fletcher School of Diplomacy, Tufts University, also in the US. SIS gained worldwide acclaim for being at the forefront of NGOs influencing amendments to Islamic Family Law, raising issues such as equality and justice for women, the right to guardianship, women as judges, and issues of fundamental liberties.

The JEWEL IWD High Tea is our blue-ribbon event held annually in March to mark International Women’s Day       ( IWD ). Previous guest speakers at the event have included Suri Kempe, programme director of Sisters In Islam; and human rights advocate Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir.
